CANADA – While Canada’s official poverty rate is roughly seven per cent, there are many more Canadians than previously thought who cannot afford their basic needs.
The study uses what is known as the material deprivation index (MDI), a metric commonly used in Europe to measure a poverty level standard of living.
Heidi Petracek explains how the new numbers were tabulated, some of the simple things more people cannot afford, and what those new findings could mean as Canada works to address its growing cost of living crisis.
